New Copy/Print System Implemented in All Barrington 220 Buildings

New Toshiba multifunction printers have now been installed in all buildings. As the project winds down, I'd like to thank all staff members for your patience during this transition. I would also like to thank my colleagues in the Department of Technology & Innovation for their hard work in making this rollout as smooth as possible.

Here are a few notes about the project:
  • 184 Toshiba multifunction devices (print/copy/scan) have been deployed in 13 buildings.
  • 1,100 staff members have successfully enrolled their ID badge with the managed print system.
  • Over 4,000 print or copy jobs per day are run through our printers with very little trouble from these new devices.
  • Staff members can now release their print jobs at any available printer within the district.
  • Print jobs remain in queue for up to 48 hours.
  • For those who scan, our new printers will scan and send a document to your email address without the need for typing your email address. The badge authentication at the printer takes care of this step.
Savings are already being realized, with some of these savings coming to us in a somewhat unexpected way. Within the last 30 days, 2,466 print jobs remained in the print queues and were never released for printing; thus, 16,119 sheets were never printed, 1.9 trees were never used, and an estimated $1,383 was saved. In the past, these print jobs would have piled up near the printers and would have been thrown away. Extrapolated to 9 months (a full school year), this figure could represent 145,000 saved sheets of printed paper, 17.1 saved trees, and over $12,000 saved. And this just represents unclaimed print jobs.
If you have any questions regarding the use of the new printing/copying system, please visit your school LTA in the Library. Our tech support team is also available for any technical questions that you may have. You may contact the tech team during school and business hours at x. 1500.

Introducing the New IC Student Profile View

The school year started with some useful changes to the Infinite Campus Grade Book, Campus Instruction. Today we are happy to announce a new feature in Campus Tools, the Student Profile.  Locating key student information in one tab makes it easier for staff to obtain a snapshot view of how the student is progressing.

The following instructions and screen shots are provided by Infinite Campus and can be found along with videos and tutorials in Campus Community.

The Student Profile tab displays a current snapshot of the student's grades, attendance data, behavior incidents, and course work. This is a read-only tab, but users (counselors, school administrators, etc.) can view detailed information from this tab.

Student data is organized into cards for each section: Census, In-Progress Grades, Attendance, Behavior, and Student To Do. Data is accurate as of the current date and time.

Student Profile

Student Census Information

A general summary of the student's address(es) and contact information, along with the student picture (if uploaded), display.

Student Census Information

In-Progress Grades

In-Progress Grades information displays for each course in which the student is actively enrolled for the current term.

This section displays the student's Cumulative GPA, amount of credits earned and required, and whether the student is on track for graduation.

In-Progress Grades Display

To see grading standard information, click the progress bar. A side panel displays that shows the scores received for the standards. In the example below, there are four grading standards aligned to the World History course, and only one has been scored, giving the student a progress of 25%.

Scored Standards Display

This World History course also has Grading Tasks aligned to it. Click the scores for the grading tasks. The side panel displays the assignment and scores for those assignments.

Grading Task Side Panel Information

Click the Close button on the side panels to return the Student Profile tab.

Attendance

View the student's attendance record for the last 30 days, the last year, or the last 7 days. The total number of absences for a full day and for a period display, as well as the total tardies by period.

Attendance Information

Select a date with a record (in the calendar, these are colored circles) to show more information about the attendance data. On the side panel, the date and term display, listing the courses, the teachers, and the assigned attendance codes.

Attendance Detail

Absences and Tardies use the same color coding as other Attendance tools (Student Attendance tab, Attendance Wizard, etc.). Select a Filter to view details of an attendance event. Exempt attendance events are included on the calendar but are not included in any count of attendance.

Filter Attendance Events

If the student met the criteria for attendance letters, those are also listed as an indication of what letters were sent (up to five) from Infinite Campus.

Attendance Letters

Behavior

The Behavior card lists the number of incidents (up to five) in which the student was involved for the current year, total detention time the student needs to serve, and any suspension days.

If the student does not have any behavior events, text indicating this displays.

Behavior Information

Click the date of the incident or the name of the incident to open the side panel that displays more details of the incident. This panel lists the information recorded in Behavior Management when processing the behavior event. It includes information on the incident, recorded comments, and information on the resolution.

Behavior Detail Information

Student To Do

The list of To Do items is the same list of To Do items available in Campus Student, and comes from the teacher's Grade Book.   Items can be viewed for all past due, 30 days past due, 7 days past due, or 7 days in the future (work that is due in the next week).

The list of items can be sorted by any of the columns - course name, assignment name, point value, or due date. Use the arrows along the bottom of the card to navigate to other pages.

Student To Do

Select a To Do item to display more details. The Side Panel lists the assigned and due dates, what grade book category it is aligned to, and the teacher of the course.

How to Access the Barrington 220 District Copy Center

Have you seen this?

This print job is over 100 pages. This job can still be printed, but please submit large jobs to the BHS Copy Center.

For over 20 years, the Copy Center has served Barrington 220 teachers and staff. Requesting copy services for any size job is an easy process, and many services are offered in the Copy Center that are not possible in buildings. The Copy Center offers efficiency, high quality, and reduced overall costs. Further, copy jobs are not reflected on individual PaperCut accounts—jobs are instead accounted by building.

Steve Underwood, Coordinator of Document Systems, and Charles Wells, Copy Center Assistant, run our Barrington 220 Copy Center and provide truly exceptional customer service. They have provided this information as a reminder about how to access Copy Center services:

The Barrington 220 Copy Center is available to all staff. We provide document production for small and large requests.

We are Located in Barrington High School and our hours of operation are 7:00 AM—3:30 PM, Monday–Friday.

For elementary schools and middle schools, large projects such as bound and signature booklets can be completed with a five-day turnaround time due to transportation of completed documents.

Because the Copy Center is located at Barrington High School, daily classroom jobs are completed within 48 hours of the time it was dropped off in the Copy Center. Large jobs such as bound or signature booklets in large quantities require additional time.

The Copy Center tries to accommodate any and all requests, provided we are given enough time to complete them.

Create Digital Books with iBooks Author

When teachers and students wish to take their Clips-created video the next level with additional tools, they can use iMovie, an app dedicated to creating videos with effects meant to help the video creator shape the story. Similarly, iBooks Author gives writers additional functions and freedom to take their written creation above what even the Book Creator app can provide.

iBooks Author is a macOS app, available for free from the Mac App Store. iBooks Author uses the familiar tools and layouts of Pages, Numbers, and Keynote to help users create a multi-touch book, a type of interactive and enhanced digital book. With iBooks Author, videos can expand to full screen, photos can be presented as albums, and "widgets" can be used to check for understanding or demonstrate a concept using an animation.

Some authors choose to take the books they've written and create digital copies without adding any further features. However, authors who use the iBooks Author app to create multi-touch books from their content allow readers new ways to interact and engage with the story.

Recently, I attended an iBooks Author conference to learn more about how this tool can be used to help tell stories and share content. Here are a few authentic examples of how iBooks Author is being used by authors from all walks of life.

Lia Lagio uses iBooks Author to create better textbooks for students learning to become physicians in New York.

Luis Martinez uses iBooks Author to bring his own 1970 diary as a Marine in Vietnam to life. (Book is in process.)

Fritz Lauriston leveraged the advanced tools in iBooks Author to empower his students to write a phsyics textbook.

Luke Guidici wrote a book featuring photos from old cameras purchased from thrift stores using iBooks Author.

Jason Lamar used iBooks Author to partner with the Ohio Secretary of State Department to write a book about the State of Ohio and the History of the United States Presidency.

Bee Kapitan created a multi-touch book about all different types of cheese—including fancy and fine cheeses—using the tools of iBooks Author.
