Reading Supports on the MacBook

Kelly Key’s Top Picks
AT Coordinator, Barrington 220
Last month, I shared valuable features and apps on the iPad to support your students with Reading. This month, I will share my top picks available on the MacBook!

Text to Speech

You can read any text on the computer (with exception of a locked PDF) by turning this feature on in System Preferences (System Preferences > Accessibility > Speech > check Speak selected text...). After turning on this feature, to have the text read out loud, simply highlight the text and press the option key and esc key on your keyboard.

Make Locked PDFs & Scanned Documents Accessible

Similar to the text leveling feature in Snap & Read, www.rewordify.com is a free website students and teachers can use to simplify reading material for easier comprehension. Simply type (or copy and paste) the text into the yellow box at the top of the webpage, click Rewordify text and it will create a simplified version! It includes text to speech and highlights the words they have changed.

Learning Ally

This incredible resource is available on the MacBook as well! We have a district-wide grant to provide students with Learning Ally books if they qualify as having a print disability, a vision impairment, or physical disability. They must have access to digital books written on their IEP or 504 plan as an accommodation in order to qualify. Contact Kelly Key to get your students registered and start using this amazing resource today!

Barrington 220 Provides Digital Access to all Employees

We are pleased to note that all Barrington 220 classified and certified employees now have digital access via Apple MacBook, iPad, or iPhone. Custodians now have direct access to the district's help desk ticketing system. Classroom aides now have access to many of the apps students use in classrooms daily. Administrative assistants and specialists will be able to use MacBook laptops in all meeting areas. All employees now have access to Skyward accounts to access personal and financial records.

During planning stages in the past year, our rollout began in November and concluded at the end of the year. Device rollouts started by providing iPad devices to many of our Barrington 220 classified staff. This took place through multiple deployment/training events, where devices were enrolled onto our network, and staff learned some basics of how to access the Internet, Google Apps, and a set of training video clips produced by members of our tech team. These video clips, in English and Spanish languages, provide staff members with information about how to access systems such as Skyward.

In December 2018, MacBook laptops were introduced to classified staff members who were formerly using Windows desktop computers. Old Windows desktop computers were both at the end of a lease cycle and the end of practical life. Training events were scheduled to keep class sizes small, and staff members were provided a two-hour introduction to MacBook and macOS concepts.

I attended most of these training events and the staff were absolutely great to work with!

Barrington 220 employees using iPad or MacBook who have questions are encouraged to stop by their school library and get their questions answered by one of our LTA staff members. Did you forget a password? Is your device not working correctly? If so, reach out to our tech support department at x.1500 (224-655-1500). Our tech team is glad to help!

IXL Trial for Grades 1-5

Several teachers have requested access to supplemental Math and ELA resources. In response, the Instructional Technology Department requested and received a trial of IXL for both Math and ELA. Elements of Learning Part 3: Personalization of Learning

Apple recently published a series of three books on the topic of Educational Leadership. Written in partnership with SRI Education's Center for Technology in Learning and with contributions from Apple Distinguished Educators, this series highlights the latest research and knowledge about great teaching and learning. In fact, the book Elements of Leadership even features the Barrington 220 District Technology Committee as an example of shared leadership in instructional technology (page 21).

This bsd220tech series focuses on the book Elements of Learning which discusses powerful instructional strategies that engage learners and empower them to believe that their work matters.  This month, we'll explore how some important tweaks to traditional student projects can take them to the next level.

Elements of Learning

Part One: Teamwork
Part Two: Creativity

Elements of Learning—Part 3 of 5: Personalization

Personalization of learning is a key component of developing student agency in their learning. The goal of personalizing learning is to increase motivation and engagement. This is accomplished by making the learning as relevant and meaningful as possible. In addition, personalization creates the best chance for the task to hit "the sweet spot" of difficulty. The goal is to make the task challenging enough that the student feels it is worth their time and effort, but not so challenging that they feel they are incapable of achieving the goal. By creating learning opportunities for students that are relevant to students and giving some level of ownership over the path to success or the outcome itself, you are providing opportunities for deeper learning. Personalizing learning can take many forms, but to be most effective, it must contain three vital elements: variation, choice, and equity.

Variation in Task

There are many ways to effectively incorporate variation into student work.
  • Ask students to complete different activities
  • Develop tasks with multiple difficulty levels based on student aptitude
  • Allow students to work on different time tables
  • Provide opportunities for students to create different products
  • Give students the option to explore different content
  • Provide different levels of support
  • Ask students to use different tools to complete the work
  • Ask students to focus on different aspects of a group project based on interest or unique talents

Regardless of the type of variation you attempt, the goal is always the same: to increase student ownership and engagement through personalizing the task. Obviously, this becomes very difficult when you start to think about the countless needs and differences among your students. Learning Management Systems such as Schoology make this more manageable. In addition, there are apps for elementary students that will offer differentiated tasks based on student performance.

Student Choice

Not only is it important to provide variation in task, but giving students choice over those variations is a central component of effective personalization. Any of the components listed above could be effective ground for providing opportunities for choice. For example, assigning students different topics to research for class presentations would qualify as variation, but not choice. Allowing students to select a topic that is meaningful to them would increase choice. Taking it one step further by allowing students to select the means of communicating their learning and the timetable for completion, rather than asking them all do a class presentation, would allow significant student choice.

Student choice is not always appropriate. Students must have a foundation of knowledge about that which they are choosing, as well as a good understanding of the options they have when choosing.

Equitable Access

Equitable access to learning is achieved when supports are in place to allow students of varying needs and capabilities to have similar educational experiences as their peers. Students are unique and require different access to learning supports to achieve the learning goals. For example, one student might need to read a text multiple times and in a different setting. Another student may need more practice on a particular concept. Still another student may need access to additional resources. By taking advantage of digital resources and providing online access to materials, students have the ability to practice at the pace and time that is best for them.

By using accessibility features of digital devices, students with various learning needs can access the same materials as their peers. All of these strategies create greater opportunity for students to achieve self-efficacy—a belief in students' ability to complete learning goals.

PARCC is Now IAR

Illinois School Districts have been waiting for information from ISBE regarding the 2018-19 state assessment. The following message was received from ISBE this week.
IAR Student Accommodations

School staff can begin to enter student accommodation indicators in SIS (or enter in to the school software package that feeds information into SIS). New Meridian will provide the test content/forms for the next two years to ensure compatibility and continuity through the transition. The agency will continue to use 100% PARCC content and forms built to the standard of the PARCC assessments, so the accommodations that were available last year, will be available for the spring 2019 administration.
ISBE reports the student accommodation indicators and rules have not changed and teachers can now begin to enter accommodations. ISBE allows teachers in districts whose Student Information System does not support entry and uploading to enter accomodations directly into ISBE SIS. Barrington 220 teachers will enter student IAR accommodations for IEP, 504, or EL students in Infinite Campus for uploading to ISBE. Teachers can begin entry of student accommodations January 23, 2019.

Marijana Jensen will be the primary contact for teachers needing assistance with IAR accommodations.

Click here to access instructions on how and where to enter student IAR accommodations.
